HONER
The Honer – better known as the Steinberger for those who cannot afford it – I saw it for the first time in the hands of Mick Goodrick during a concert at Siena Jazz. It made an impression on me because he was playing it with no pick, and it was the first time that I saw an electric guitar player play with his fingers, and I asked myself what was someone like him doing with such a synthetic instrument. To tell you the truth, I chose it just because, having gained the bad habit to travel with three guitars, I needed an instrument that pretty much was “pocket size”. I must admit though that in the end I really got into it. Maybe because of its “Techno” look, or maybe because I always wanted a solid body with a mean sound: for me, a guitar player of classic roots, it’s like getting on a chopper disguised with sunglasses, long sideburns and a black leather jacket. Thing is, that now I really like it a lot, I am happy I saved the money to get a Steinberger and I understand the great Goodrick: you always need to copy those who are better than you.
